Crown Preparation

  • Numbness from the anesthetic can take 1-3 hours to wear off. In some cases, it may take longer. Be careful not to bite yourself while numb. We advise you wait to eat until the numbness wears off. If you choose to eat while numb, eat soft foods to minimize the risk of biting your tongue, lip or cheek.
  • Rarely, temporary or permanent nerve damage can result from the injection. Please call our office if this occurs.
  • You may experience sensitivity in your jaw muscles from being open for an extended period of time. You can take ibuprofen if your jaw is sore.
  • You may experience sensitivity in your gums/teeth after the tooth is prepared and the temporary crown is placed. The temporary crown does not fit as well as the permanent crown so slight sensitivity is normal. If the tooth is painful, please call our office.
  • If after the numbness wears off you feel like you are biting on the temporary too much or that your bite is off, please give us a call so we can adjust your bite.
  • While in the temporary crown, you need to be careful with eating sticky foods, such as taffies or gum. These types of sticky foods may pull the temporary crown off. If the temporary crown comes off you can pop it back on the tooth and give us a call so we can cement it back on. Do not leave the temporary off until the cement appointment because the teeth can move and the permanent crown may not fit.
  • Brush the temporary like normal. When flossing push the floss in between the teeth and slide it through instead of popping the floss out. (Just while you have the temporary)
  • In some cases, after the tooth is prepared for the crown, the tooth may become irritated and the nerve may get inflamed. We may have to refer you to an endodontist for a root canal to be completed.
