What is an Orthodontist?

We have all visited an orthodontist at some point in our lives. Orthodontists are dentists who treat issues with your teeth and gums. They can correct tooth alignment by moving teeth forward, backward, or to the side.

The goal of an orthodontist is to get the most favorable result for their patient, who is often self-conscious about their smile and appearance. That is exactly what our Smile Island Pediatric & Adult Dental Group orthodontists do. We help you regain your natural smile and appearance.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialty area of dentistry that focuses on correcting malocclusions (bad bites) with braces and other appliances used to hold or realign teeth or correct bite problems. Orthodontists also treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, which can result from poor alignment of the jaw joints.

Orthodontists work closely with their patients to determine the best treatment plan for their needs. In many cases, they will recommend braces to get the desired results. They can also perform other procedures like Invisalign or clear braces if you prefer them over traditional metal brackets or wires used in traditional braces. The goal of orthodontic treatment is to create an effective and comfortable bite that does not interfere with normal eating and speaking habits.

Orthodontics for Teens

Orthodontic treatment for teens is generally more conservative than adult orthodontics. It's less likely to cause complications such as tooth or jawbone loss. However, if you're considering getting braces, there's no reason to wait until your teen turns 18 before making an appointment with an orthodontist.

Different braces are available, each with different benefits and drawbacks. One option is clear aligners, used temporarily while your child's teeth move into place.

Another option is full braces — where metal brackets attach to teeth — that stay permanently once placed on the teeth.

Braces are custom-made for each patient, so the result will be a better fit for their anatomy. The period between when your child turns 14 and 18 is an excellent time to start planning for braces.

Bottom Line

Orthodontic treatment has become much less intrusive, less expensive, and more effective than in the past. Teenagers can now have straight teeth without putting off the treatment until they are older.

Orthodontic treatment isn't just a way to get a beautiful smile but can also improve how you feel about yourself.
