Rocklin, CA

We recommend sealants if you want the best possible protection for your child’s molars and premolars. During their initial appointment, we will determine if your child is a suitable candidate for this safe and effective treatment.

What Are Dental Sealants?

The purpose of sealants is to prevent dental caries (cavities) from penetrating the deep pits and fissures of the teeth. The sealant material is a protective coating that is applied on these surfaces. This process prevents bacteria and food particles from settling into the deep grooves of the teeth.

How Do Sealants Work?

In many cases, it is near impossible for children to clean the tiny deep and narrow grooves on the chewing surface of their teeth. When a sealant is applied, the surface of the tooth is somewhat flatter and smoother. There are no longer any places on the chewing surface that the bristles of a toothbrush can’t reach and clean. Since food particles can be removed more easily and effectively, there is much less chance that decay will start.

What Is The Life Expectancy of Tooth Sealants?

The longevity of sealants can vary. Sealants which have remained in place for three to five years would be considered successful; however, sealants can last much longer. It is not uncommon to see sealants placed during childhood still intact on the teeth of adults.

Our office will check your child’s sealants during routine dental visits and will recommend repair or reapplication when necessary.

Which Teeth Should Be Sealed

Any tooth that has deep grooves and pits or any other characteristics that cause food particles and plaque to accumulate should be sealed. The most common teeth for a dentist to seal are a child’s “back” teeth, or molars. Our pediatric specialists are highly trained to detect the appropriate teeth that need to be sealed. They monitor for sealants at each routine check-up appointment.

What Is The Procedure For Sealants?

Placing dental sealants is a very easy process, usually completed in one visit. The tooth is cleaned, conditioned and kept very dry. The sealant is then flowed into the grooves of the tooth where it is hardened with a special blue light. All normal activities can occur directly after the appointment.

After sealant placement, it is just as important for your child to brush and floss their teeth. Sealants are only one part of the defensive plan against tooth decay. Be sure to read our tips for brushing.

How Much Does Is Cost?

This treatment is quite affordable, especially when you consider the value of protection against early childhood cavities. Most dental insurance companies cover sealants, up to a certain age. It is very important to get sealants placed as early as possible to take advantage of this insurance benefit.
